The framing moves the bar: not whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic, but how it is sourced, produced, and verified.
AI and digital tools are now embedded in formulation workflows. Vantage and Croda note that technology can advance sustainability goals only when its own footprint is measured against its performance and efficiency gains. That is a quantifiable balance, not a slogan. The suppliers argue provenance and verification data now outweigh the natural-versus-synthetic binary that has long dominated clean beauty discourse.

For formulation chemists, the practical consequence is a different verification workflow. Origin labels are insufficient. A base product carrying an upcycled actives claim needs a disclosed ratio of repurposed feedstock versus virgin input.
